HARDWOOD FLOORING PROS

There are three types of wood flooring, and two types of wood
floors that can be refinished and resurfaced. Lets start with more
traditional type, solid wood floors usually 3/4x 2 1/4 0r wider but
always 3/4 of an inch thick. This type of wood floor has been
around for years is known to be the best as it a warmth and rich
feel that no other wood floor can add. This solid wood floor can
be nailed or glued but only with widths as wide as 3 1/4.
Anything wider than this is recommended to be nailed down on
plywood. When using a glue method we recommend using a
concrete epoxy that will not just minimize the moisture
penetration from going into the wood but will eliminate it
completely. The type of wood glue you can use for this
installation is a polyurethane glue only, like wood glues by
Bostik or Mapei. If you chose a nail down method than we
recommend you using a moisture barrier instead of the older
technology of 15# felt paper that only works as a retardant and
will not prevent moisture penetration. So in that case we
suggest you use it will completely block all moisture
penetration. A solid wood floor can be refinished multiple times
actually up to 5-7 different times depending why you are
refinishing your wood floor. When refinishing a solid wood floor
one must always allow for a 3 coat process which is standard,
one coat of stain and two coats of polyurethane.

The second type of wood floor is an engineered wood floor the
name says it all its basically a manufactured wood floor
product. Its made up of at least 3-5 layers all running
perpendicular to one another. One of the great things about a
engineered wood floor is that it will never cup or buckle. This
type of installation can be installed using a polyurethane glue
or a water base glue and really doesn't need a concrete sealer.
The engineered wood floor alot of floor companies do not
recommend refinishing this as the top layer is usually very thin
but with today's technology in floor sanders it should be know
problem. As long as the top layer is at least 1/8 inch thick at
minimum. Because the way the flooring here was cut, when
sanding, refinishing, resurfacing one should allow for a 4 coat
process. Again one coat of stain and two coats of polyurethane
these types of wood floors almost always absorb the the
urethane.

The third type of wood floor is called a laminate floor or
floating wood floor. Although they don't have the great name
that comes with there counter parts believe me these floor are
great! I personally suggest using a Tekno-Step or Quick-Step
product, I know personally that the locking system to these wood
floors are excellent and the wear protection you get is second
to nun. With today's technology these laminate floors look as
realistic as wood emulating hand-scraped and exotic species of
wood floors. However these types of floors cant be refinished at
all but will last at least 20 years.
